Light Refreshing Spanish Albarino

2011 Martin Codax Albarino

Never had an Albarino? Well you are in for a treat! Grown primarily in the Rias Baixus region of northwestern Spain as well as Portugal, this white wine is medium-bodied with high acidity accompanied by flavors of citrus, peach and lemon. The damp, cool fall and winters and dry spring and summers of this region create the ideal environment for creating wonderful Albarinos. A similar wine called Vinho Verde is grown in Portugal and can be either still or slightly sparkling.

This particular wine has aromas of apples and lemons with a slight herbal scent. When served chilled, as it should be, the flavors are subtle but fresh with apple, peach and citrus most prominent but with a hint of spice followed by a dry, crisp finish.

Food Pairing: My husband and I had this with a Cuban meal and thoroughly enjoyed the light, fresh edge with this type of cuisine. You may also pair it with fish, seafood, roast pork, poultry and veal.
