2010 Volteo Tempranillo
I have to be perfectly honest and say that the label on this one caught my eye and I just had to give it a try. That is not normally the way I would choose a wine as I usually rely on friends, in-store recommendations and my ever trusty Vivino app.
This Spanish wine was a nice surprise, after allowing an hour for the wine to open up (highly recommended), aromas of ripe black currants and raspberries wafted into the air. Upon sipping, this medium bodied wine was full of fruit with definite flavors of ripe red cherries, blackberries and a slight kick of black pepper. It is well balanced with just enough tannins and has a juicy finish hinting at vanilla and spice. It is not overly oaky but refreshes with its clean taste.
Chill this wine to between 62-65 degrees for serving.
Oh, and it does have an unusual closure, a plastic reusable cork, which might not be as romantic as a regular cork but it sure comes in handy when bringing it on a picnic or on vacation as it is easy to carry home.
Food Pairing: A versatile wine that can easily be paired with an elegant steak, spicy Steak Fajitas, chicken and pork chops as well as Three-Pepper Pizza, Simple Crockpot Barbecued Pork and even burgers.
