What is a Mojito?
A mojito is a classic drink that originated in Cuba that contains rum, mint, sugar, lime juice, and soda water. Adding fresh fruit such as berries makes this Blueberry Mojito Cocktail a sweet twist on the standard.
Best Rum for A Mojito
This classic rum cocktail is nothing without a great rum! And a white or Blanco rum makes this drink into a refreshing drink for summer. A good rum can be found in a range of prices from low to high so don't think you have to settle for mediocre.
Cruzan Aged Light Rum - is a great affordable option that adds a tropical edge with hints of vanilla and coconut
Bacardi Superior - was made for mojitos. It's light, pleasant, and very budget-friendly.
Bayou White Rum - is a medium-priced rum that is considered one of the top rums in this price range. It has rich butterscotch flavor with hints of tropical fruit.
Flor de Cana 4 - is also in the medium price range and comes from Nicaragua. It is a dry rum that is not too fruity but suitably complex.
Banks 5 Island Rum - is a pricier rum that blends 21 rums from 5 islands together. It's a dry, remarkably balanced rum that has all the classic flavors of the 1920s.
Ingredients
Blueberries - fresh or frozen (thawed) blueberries can be used. If more blueberry flavor is desired, add a tablespoon of blueberry preserves. It also adds a touch more sweetness.
Mint Leaves - fresh is a must to use as this is the star ingredient of this blueberry mojito cocktail. They also help create a nice balance between the sweet sugar and the tart lime.
Club Soda - adds lightness and bubbles. You can substitute sparkling water, either plain or flavored.
White Rum - white or Blanco are the best choices. See above for suggestions.
Lime - fresh is always best but bottled lime juice can be used if you can't find the real deal
Sugar - sweetens the drink. You can sub simple syrup or agave but I feel sugar works the best
Blueberry Preserves (optional) - adds more blueberry flavor, more vibrant color, and a little extra sweetness
How to Make a Blueberry Mojito
- Place mint in the bottom of a glass or cocktail shaker.
- Add blueberries and blueberry preserves, if using.
- Sprinkle in sugar.
- Squeeze the juice from ¼ -½ of a lime.
- Muddle well. You want to bruise the mint to release its oils and mash the blueberries for flavor.
- Pour in rum.
- Add ice to the mixture then top off with club soda. You can either serve this blueberry mojito cocktail as-is with a straw or strain the mixture then add ice and serve.
- Garnish with a cocktail skewer of blueberries and a sprig of mint.
Variations
Berry Mojito - try raspberries, strawberries, or blackberries in lieu of blueberries
Flavored rum - add coconut rum in place of white rum for a blueberry coconut mojito
Blue Mojito - add ½-oz blue curacao
Herbs - add fresh basil for a blueberry basil mojito or maybe a sprig of rosemary
Other fruits - replace lime with lemon for a Blueberry Lemon Mojito or make it a real fruity mojito with the addition of 2 ounces of kiwi, peach, or even pineapple puree to the blueberries
Alcohol - try vodka in place of rum as in my Kiwi Mojito or leave it out altogether for a delicious Blueberry Mojito Mocktail
