Hurricane Cocktail | 2 Cookin Mamas This tropical hurricane cocktail will transport you to a Caribbean island. Light & dark rum combine with orange & pineapple juices for a fresh fruity drink. #rumcocktail #MadriGras #tropicalcocktail #cocktail #fruitycocktail #drink #recipe #punch

Well, Mardi Gras has passed but the Florida Keys are beckoning soon and the "Conchs" love a good hurricane down there. No, not that kind of hurricane! Just the kind with lots of rum in it!

If you've ever been to the Keys, they are laid back and tropical. It never fails to amaze me that I feel like I've traveled far from the mainland and somehow arrived on a Caribbean island. Tropical drinks are the order of the day there. Refreshing cocktails such as Mango Pina Coladas, Sea Breeze and, of course, this rum punch. This punch is full of all those island flavors like fresh orange juice, pineapple juice, a little pomegranate grenadine syrup and, of course, several kinds of rum!

Where did the Hurricane Cocktail come from?

The cocktail is said to have originated in the French Quarter of New Orleans at the iconic Pat O'Brien's Bar. History says that, in order to obtain whiskey for his customer, Pat O'Brien had to purchase extra rum. In order to use this rum up, he concocted a drink that is today known as the Hurricane. And it's called a Hurricane because the tall glass it was served in looked like a hurricane lamp. Who knew?

Top it with a slice of orange or pineapple and enjoy. Word of warning though, this drink sneaks up on you with its potency so just relax and take them slow and easy.

    Love cocktails? Here's more 5 0'clock deliciousness.

Strawberry Lemonade Cocktail - a simple cocktail full of fresh strawberries, tangy lemonade and a touch of strawberry vodka.

Island Breeze - based on a Sea Breeze, this cocktail substitutes blood orange for grapefruit juice and adds Cointreau for a delicious orange flavor boost.

Pineapple Coconut Mojito - A tropical mojito with a little more "island" feel. Coconut water, pineapple juice and sparkling lime water for a light, cool, refreshing drink.

    Cheers!
