Tips for Choosing the Perfect Whole Frozen Chicken for Air Frying

Use these guidelines when picking the best frozen whole chicken for your air fryer:

    • Optimal Size Matters: Look for small to medium-sized chickens, ideally weighing around 3 to 4 pounds. This allows for proper air circulation and prevents the chicken from touching the top elements when placed in the air fryer basket. I recommend at least a 5.8 quart air fryer.
    • Lean and Organic: Opt for organic or free-range chickens, as they tend to be smaller and leaner compared to conventionally raised ones. This will enhance the flavor and offer a healthier choice.
    • Check the Packaging: Whether purchasing from a grocery store or online, carefully inspect the packaging for any signs of damage, leaks, or tears. Intact packaging ensures the chicken has been properly handled and stored.
    • No Giblets: Select a whole frozen chicken that comes without giblets inside. This saves time and hassle during preparation.
    • Frozen Solid: Ensure the chicken is frozen solid when purchasing, as this maintains freshness and prevents any bacterial growth. Avoid chickens that show signs of freezer burn or have been partially thawed, as this can alter both texture and flavor.

How to Cook a Whole Frozen Chicken in an Air Fryer

These are the simple steps with step-by-step photos for this air fryer whole chicken recipe.

Prep steps for preparing chicken for air fryer.
    1. Place seasonings in a small bowl.
    2. Mix well.
    3. Pour olive oil over the chicken.
    4. Rub the oil over the entire surface.
    5. Sprinkle the spice rub over the whole chicken.
    6. Rub it in well.
How to air fry a whole frozen chicken.
    1. Place chicken, breast side down into an air fryer basket that has been sprayed with avocado or olive oil cooking spray.
    2. Cook for 30 minutes. If the frozen chicken has giblets in the cavity, carefully remove them now.
    3. Turn the chicken breast-side up.
    4. Cook another 30 minutes or until a digital thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the breast registers 165°F. If the chicken needs extra time, place it back in the air fryer and cook another 10-15 minutes, checking the temperature every 5 minutes. The total cook time will depend on the size of the bird and the type of air fryer.

Tip: If you want beautiful crispy skin, spray the top of the chicken with cooking oil spray in the last 10-15 minutes of air frying.

How Long to Cook Whole Frozen Chicken in Air Fryer

When air frying a whole frozen chicken at 350°F, it can take anywhere from 1 hour to 1 hour and 15 minutes depending on the size of the chicken and air fryer model.

    Recipe Tips

Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned chef, these tips will ensure your air fryer roast chicken turns out golden, juicy, and delicious.

    • Customize Seasonings to Taste: While this recipe provides a delightful spice mix, don't hesitate to customize the seasonings with fresh herbs and spices to suit your family's tastes.
    • Preheat for Crisp Perfection: Preheating the air fryer is crucial for achieving that perfect extra crispy skin. Allow your air fryer to preheat to 350°F for approximately 4 minutes before placing the whole bird inside. This initial blast helps achieve the golden, crunchy goodness.
    • Flip for Even Crispiness: For uniform crispiness, remember to flip the chicken halfway through cooking. Starting with the breast side down allows the skin to crisp up while flipping ensures that both sides cook evenly.
    • Check Often Towards the End: As the cooking time nears completion, keep a close eye on the chicken during the last 10 minutes. Air fryer models vary, and the size of the chicken can also influence cooking time. Checking ensures the chicken doesn't overcook, maintaining its moistness and flavor.
    • Internal Temperature: Utilize a meat or instant-read thermometer to ensure the internal temperature of the chicken reaches the USDA-recommended safe temperature of 165°F. Insert the meat thermometer into the thickest part of the chicken breast to accurately gauge doneness.
    • Rest Before Serving: Let the cooked chicken rest for a few minutes before slicing and serving. This brief resting period allows the juices to redistribute throughout the meat, keeping it both moist and flavorful.

How to Store, Freeze, and Reheat Leftovers

Storing: Proper storage is key to maintaining the freshness and flavor of leftover chicken meat. Once cooled to room temperature, place the leftovers in an airtight container or wrap them tightly with aluminum foil. Store the container in the refrigerator. It will keep for up to 4 days.

Freezing: Begin by portioning the chicken into individual servings, if desired, to make reheating easy. Place the chicken in a freezer-safe container or freezer bag, removing as much air as possible to prevent freezer burn. It can be stored for up to 3 months.

Reheating: For leftover air fryer whole frozen chicken, the preferred method for reheating is to use the air fryer. Preheat the air fryer to 350°F, then place the leftover chicken in the basket in a single layer. Reheat for about 5 minutes, or until the chicken is heated through. Alternatively, you can reheat the chicken in the oven or microwave.
