Ingredients you'll need
- Grape Jello: The jello not only gives your shots their vibrant color but also packs a punch of sweet, fruity flavor.
- Water: Hot water dissolves the jello and helps to activate the gelatin so everything mixes smoothly.
- Red Berry Vodka: This adds a delightful berry twist to the classic grape flavor, giving your shots an extra kick. You can also opt for your favorite vodka for a more grape-flavored shot.
- Lime Juice: To balance the flavors, a splash of lime juice helps cut through the sweetness with a little tangy freshness.
- Whipped Cream (optional): Adds a little creamy indulgence to your shots.
- Purple Sanding Sugar (optional): Sprinkle the purple sugar on top of the whipped cream for sparkle and a little crunch. It's the perfect finishing touch!

Making these Purple Hooter Jello Shots is as easy as it gets! With just a few simple steps, you’ll have a tray full of fun, boozy treats ready to go. Check the printable recipe card below for the exact measurements.
- Place the grape jello in a medium bowl and pour boiling water over the top. Stir well until the jello has dissolved completely.
- Add lime juice and vodka to the jello mixture. Stir.
- Pour the grape mixture into plastic shot cups, filling about ¾ full. This recipe will make approximately 9 shots. You can easily double or triple that for a large party. TIP: Place the shot cups on a baking sheet before filling them to make them easier to transfer to the refrigerator.
- Move them to the refrigerator and chill for about 2 hours or until set. Cap them until ready to serve. If desired, pipe whipped cream on top and sprinkle with purple sanding sugar just before serving.
These easy purple hooter jello shots are perfect for your next party. This easy recipe can be made up to 5 days in advance so no need to stress right before the big event. Whether it's for Halloween spooktaculars, football parties (cause I can see Minnesota Viking and Baltimore Raven fans would love these), or Mardi Gras, this jello shooter will be a winner.
Recipe tips
Adjusting the Alcohol Content: If you prefer your jello shots on the stronger side, you can add more alcohol for a thinner consistency. On the other hand, if you want them firmer and easier to handle, use less alcohol and replace it with more water to keep that firm, jiggly texture.
Use the Right Containers: Plastic 2-ounce jello shot cups, also known as condiment cups, are ideal for these shots. They come with lids, making them easy to transport and store, plus they’re the perfect size for single servings.
Chill Time is Key: Be sure to give your jello shots plenty of time to chill—at least two hours or until they’re fully set. This ensures they’re firm enough to hold their shape and have the best texture.
Recipe variations
Berry Bliss: Substitute half of the berry vodka with plain vodka and the other half with Chambord raspberry liqueur. This adds the fruity, slightly tart, and sweet raspberry flavor to these Purple Jello Shots with the
Garnish Swap: Instead of purple sanding sugar, try topping the whipped cream with lime zest for a zesty kick, a thinly sliced lime wedge for a refreshing look, or a maraschino cherry for a classic, sweet touch.
Citrus Twist: Add a splash of orange liqueur, like Triple Sec or Grand Marnier, in place of the lime juice for a citrusy twist. This adds a bright, orange flavor that pairs well with the grape jello and berry vodka.
Layered Look: For more visually striking vodka jello shots, create layers by making two batches—one with grape jello and the other with a different color, like lime or raspberry. Pour the purple layer, let it set, then add the second layer for a fun, striped effect.
How to store jello shots
Proper storage is key to keeping Jello shots fresh and delicious if making them ahead of time. It is important to avoid garnishing the shots before storing them, save the toppings for just before serving. Place the lids on your jello shot cups to prevent them from drying out, and store them in the refrigerator. They’ll stay fresh for up to 5 days.
As tempting as it might be to freeze jello shots for longer storage, it’s best to avoid doing so. Freezing can alter the texture and consistency of the gelatin, leading to a grainy texture or separation, which can ruin the smooth, fun experience these shots are known for. Stick to refrigeration for the best results!
