Fun and festive treats for kids of all ages

Making special holiday treats with the kids has always been something my family loves to do. It is such a fun and heartwarming time that has created lasting memories for myself and my kids. In fact, they carry on many of the same traditions in their own families today.

Truly special treats like Cheesecake Stuffed Cones for July 4th, Monster Truffles for Halloween, Peppermint Pinwheel Cookies for Christmas, and these Easy Cake Balls for Easter are ones kids, big and little alike, just adore. Of course, a fun breakfast like these Blueberry Cake Pops will be met with smiles all around too!

Ready to assemble ingredients on table.

Why you'll love these ice cream cone teepees

Easy to Make: These cone-shaped treats are not only cute, but they're also easy to make. With just a few ingredients, you can transform ordinary ice cream sugar cones into a fun and delicious treat.

Fun for Thanksgiving: All that dipping in chocolate and decorating with sprinkles is loads of fun while the cake filling (or any filling you like!) is a tasty surprise. You can make them ahead of time and store them in the fridge for easy party prep.

    Ingredients

Here's what you'll need to make these festive teepees. The exact measurements are in the printable recipe card below.

    Sugar Cone Teepees ingredients.

Sugar Cones: The base of the teepees.

Chocolate Chips: For dipping and decorating the outside of the cones.

Sprinkles: To decorate the dipped cones and make them colorful and fun.

Cake Crumbs & Frosting: The filling for the teepees.

Pretzel Sticks: To make the teepee poles and add that final touch to your design.

How to make sugar cone teepees

Here's a step-by-step guide to help you make these cute little teepees:

Prep step to make sugar cone teepee filling.
    1. Bake cake according to directions. Let cool then crumble in a large bowl.
    2. Add frosting to the crumbled cake.
    3. Mix well.
    4. Melt chocolate chips in the microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring in between, until smooth. Let cool slightly before dipping.
    Steps to assemble Thanksgiving teepees.
    1. Cut off the point of the sugar cone, about 1-2". You want 3 pretzel sticks to fit in snugly. Dip about 1" of the cut end into the warm chocolate.
    2. Immediately coat with sprinkles.
    3. Dip the top rim of the cone into the warm chocolate and sprinkles then place on parchment paper. Repeat with all sugar cones. To finish, dip 3 pretzel sticks into warm chocolate then insert into the small end of the cone. Hold for a few seconds until they stay in place. Chill in the refrigerator for about 10-20 minutes.
    4. Fill the cones with the chocolate cake mixture while holding the pretzel sticks in place. Do not overfill as you want them to stand upright easily. Store in the refrigerator.

    Top Tip

Extra Filling? Make Cake Balls! Use the extra cake mixture to make delicious cake balls. Just roll the mixture into balls, refrigerate for 30 minutes, and dip into melted chocolate. Chill until set.

Aren't they just the cutest Thanksgiving decor for your holiday table? Kids and adults will love these sweet concoctions and they really help everyone get into the holiday spirit. Enjoy!

    Recipe tips for success

Cut Carefully: Use a serrated knife to gently saw the tip off each cone. Be careful to avoid cracking the whole cone.

Let the Chocolate Set Completely: Make sure the chocolate or candy melts are fully hardened before handling or filling the cones to avoid smudging or cracking.

Mix Up the Decorations: Use different types of sprinkles, nuts, or colored sugar to give each teepee a unique look.

Recipe variations to mix and match your favorite flavors

These Sugar Cone Teepees are perfect for experimenting with different flavor combinations. Here are some fun options for the cake, frosting, chocolate, and sprinkles:

Cake Mix - Use your favorite flavors like yellow, white, triple chocolate fudge, or funfetti cake mix for a variety of tastes.

Frosting - Mix things up with vanilla, cream cheese, or peanut butter frosting to bind the cake crumbs and add flavor.

Chocolate Chips & Candy Melts - Use milk, dark, or white chocolate chips for dipping, or add a pop of color with colored candy melts to match the theme of your event.

Sprinkles for Every Occasion - Decorate your teepees for different holidays or events with various sprinkles-red and green for Christmas, pink and red for Valentine's Day, or orange and black for Halloween.

How to store the teepee cones

Store in an airtight container in the fridge for 3 days. Note that the cones will start to soften the longer they are stored.

The leftover filling mixture should be stored separately. Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.

    Freezing is not recommended.

    Ingredients

    Sugar Cones

    • 12 sugar cones
    • ¼ cup semisweet chocolate chips
    • 36 pretzel sticks
    • Fall colored sprinkles

    Cake Filling

    • Prepared cake (I used devils food) from a box mix
    • 16 ounce chocolate frosting

    Instructions

    Cake Filling

    • Prepare the cake mix and bake according to package instructions. Set aside to cool.
    • Once the prepared cake has cooled, crumble it, then mix with the chocolate frosting.

Sugar Cone Teepees (Make while cake is baking)

    • Prepare a baking sheet by lining with parchment paper. Set aside.
    • Cut off 1-2" of the pointy tips of the cones with a sharp knife. The hole should be big enough to snuggly fit 3 pretzel sticks. Do not cut off too much as the pretzel sticks will fall through.
    • Melt the chocolate chips in a microwave safe bowl in the microwave in 30-second increments until melted and smooth. Let the mixture cool for 5 minutes before dipping the cones into it.
    • Dip about 1-inch of the cut tip side of the cone into the chocolate and gently shake off the excess before dipping into the sprinkles.
    • Turn the cone over and dip the bottom of the cone into the melted chocolate, shaking off the excess. before dipping into the sprinkles. Place the cone onto the prepared baking sheet. Repeat with remaining sugar cones.
    • To add the pretzel sticks to the teepee, take 3 pretzel sticks and dip into the chocolate, covering about 1". Insert them into the top of the teepee and hold until set. This should only take a few seconds. Repeat with the remaining teepees.
    • Place the baking sheet into the fridge to help them set, about 10 minutes.

    To fill:

    • Remove the teepees from the fridge and fill each cone with the cake and frosting mixture. Try not to overfill as the cones may break. Tip: Support the pretzel sticks while filling the cones, so they don't move or get pushed out.
    • Keep refrigerated until ready to enjoy!

    Notes

    HOW TO STORE
Store the finished teepees and the leftover filling separately. Place them in an airtight container in the fridge for 3 days. Note that the cones will start to soften the longer they are stored. Freezing is not recommended.
