Creamy Frozen Cocktail
Very few drinks taste as creamy and rich as frozen mudslides. Whenever I make a Bailey mudslide, it reminds me of a mocha frappuccino. The best thing about this recipe is that you can change it up! Make a mudslide with ice cream, or serve a frozen mudslide without ice cream - the choice is yours!
This frozen mudslide drink recipe is one of my favorite cocktail recipes because it has such a rich and creamy texture. I just love the combination of coffee, Irish cream, and chocolate sauce. It's almost as indulgent as these pecan pie shots (but they are extra sweet). For some fruity flavors, this strawberry jalapeno Moscow mule slushie is unbeatable.
What is a mudslide drink?
Have you ever wondered what the meaning of mudslide is? I have! Turns out, there are a few different stories out there. The most reliable one is that Bailey's created the mudslide as a variation of a White Russian to market their Irish Cream liqueur.
A mudslide is very similar to a White Russian - it just has an Irish cream twist!
Mudslide vs White Russian
White Russians are coffee drinks made with coffee liqueur, vodka, and heavy cream. A mudslide is the same thing, but it uses Irish cream. I used both Bailey's Irish Cream and heavy cream in this recipe for mudslide cocktail because my version is frozen. To keep it thick and creamy, I needed both ingredients.
What's in a Mudslide?
A typical cocktail mudslide will have vodka, coffee liqueur, Bailey's Irish Cream, and heavy cream. I added ice and made a frozen version that is perfect on hot days.
Why You'll Love This Frozen Mudslide Recipe
- Made without ice cream. You can add ice cream if you want, but this version isn't as thick as a milkshake.
- Small drink. This mudslide drink recipe is a smaller size instead of a big drink in a hurricane glass, so it's easier to finish.
- Rich chocolate flavor. Garnish with your favorite dark chocolate sauce.
Mudslide Ingredients
- Baileys Irish Cream
- Kahlua Coffee Liqueur
- Vodka
- Heavy Cream
- Ice
- Dark Chocolate Syrup
- Optional Toppings: Whipped Cream and Chocolate Sprinkles (chocolate shavings, mini chocolate chips, or cocoa powder are also great ones)
How many calories are in a frozen mudslide?
Now that you've seen the ingredients for a mudslide, you may be curious as to the calories in a mudslide drink. For this recipe, it can vary depending on if you use and how much chocolate syrup you drizzle into the glass and if you top it with whipped cream and chocolate.
A serving has 528 calories without the chocolate syrup, whipped cream, and chocolate topping. Yes, it's a decadent drink. Full nutrition information is in the recipe card below.
How to Make a Frozen Mudslide Cocktail
- Place ice in a blender and add Irish Cream liqueur.
- Pour Kahlua or other coffee liqueur over ice.
- Add vodka.
- Now pour in cream or opt for ice cream.
- Once all ingredients are added it is ready to blend.
- Blend on high speed until you have a nice smooth frozen mixture.
- To prepare the rim, place chocolate syrup on a plate. Dip the rim of the glass in the syrup.
- On another plate, spread out some chocolate sprinkles or chocolate shavings. Dip chocolate-coated rim into sprinkles.
Fill glasses with frozen mudslide mixture and top with whipped cream and extra chocolate syrup. Now that is one decadent, cool and refreshing cocktail!
How to Make a Classic Mudslide on the Rocks
To make a classic mudslide on the rocks, simply pour the Irish Cream, Kahlua, vodka, and cream into a shaker and shake well. Pour over a glass filled with ice and decorated with chocolate.

Recipe Tips
- Use a good-quality blender. This will keep the drink from being lumpy because the ice is not completely blended.
- Chill the liquor. This is a good thing to do to prevent the drink from being watered down.
- Use a cocktail jigger or mini measuring cup. A jigger has 2 sides, typically the large end is 1.5 ounces and the small end is .75 ounces.
- If you are lactose-intolerant, substitute the heavy cream with non-dairy cream. Unsweetened coconut cream is a great choice.
