    Mermaid Water Drink

Published: Jun 12, 2022 by Linda Warren

    Jump to Recipe

This sweet and colorful Mermaid Water Drink is a coconutty, fruity rum punch that is the perfect refreshment for summer. It's easy to make too with only 4 ingredients, coconut rum, blue curacao, peach schnapps, and lemonade.

Its unusual blue-green color and tropical flavor will have you thinking of mermaids and island getaways with every sip. Ideal for poolside parties, backyard barbecues, or quiet evenings.

    Mermaid Water Rum Punch Cocktail

Summer is here and that means I'm craving some fun, tasty, super tropical cocktails. What's more, they've got to be refreshing and easy to make too! And nothing could be easier than this pretty and fanciful mermaid water rum punch that reminds me of crystal clear Caribbean waters.

What makes this drink so unusual and colorful? It's the Blue Curacao addition, one of my favorite liqueurs, for making pretty summery drinks. Drinks like my Blue Long Island Iced Tea, South Beach Punch Cocktail, and this Mermaid Water always stand out from the rest with their attention-getting turquoise color.

Two Mermaid Water Cocktails with daisies.

Blue Curacao lends not only the blue color to this drink but a tart orange flavor as well. This flavor complements the coconut rum and lemon flavors for a truly satisfying rum punch. Are you ready to get your mermaid vibe on?

    What is Mermaid Water?

It's a fruity rum punch cocktail with a lovely blue color. A sweet, light drink usually comprised of rum, blue curacao, and some type of fruit juice. The blue mermaid cocktail also goes by the names Tipsy Mermaid Drink, Drunken Mermaid Drink, or Mermaid Water Shot.

Why You'll Love This Mermaid Water Cocktail

    • PRETTY & Eye-Catching
    • Quick & EASY to make
    • Totally REFRESHING and perfect for summer
    • You can make it for one or by the PITCHER
    • Definite, relaxing ISLAND VIBES

    Mermaid Water Ingredients

Ingredients for Tipsy Mermaid Drink with starfish.

Are you wondering what is in the Mermaid Water drink recipe? It's a combination of all things Caribbean and summery.

Coconut rum - adds the tropical coconut flavor. You can add to the liquor content or change it out for light rum or spiced rum.

Blue Curacao - is necessary to turn the drink that pretty blue-green mermaid color. If you can't find blue curacao you can also use Triple Sec or Grand Marnier with a little blue food coloring.

Peach Schnapps - will surprise everyone sipping this drink by lending it a hint of peach flavor.

Lemonade - is both the main liquid and the sweetener for this rum punch. Limeade can also be subbed for lemonade.

    Ingredient Notes

Coconut Rum vs Spiced Rum vs Light or Dark Rum

The coconut rum gives this mermaid water more of a tropical vibe. However, you can also use a combination of spiced and light rum or stick with just the light rum.

I would advise against using dark rum as the flavor is too bold and its addition will affect the color of the cocktail.

    Garnishes

Garnishes make this drink even more colorful. Use fruits that match the flavors in the drink or as a pop of color. And don't forget the little drink umbrellas!

    • Lemon slices
    • Orange slices
    • Peach slices
    • Cherries
    • Tropical drink umbrellas

    Sugar Rim

    Closeup of colorful sugar rim.

Decorate the rim of the glass with something sweet. First, rub the rim with a lemon or lime then dip into a mix of colored sanding sugars or edible glitter. Plain sugar will work as well.

    Ingredient Substitutions and Additions

    • Blue Curacao - any orange-flavored liqueur plus blue food coloring
    • Coconut Rum - substitute white or spiced rum or in addition to coconut rum
    • Lemonade - substitute pineapple juice
    • Sparkling - add sparkling water, champagne, club soda, or lemon-lime soda for a little bubbly
    • Edible Glitter - or colored sugar is particularly pretty on the rim or add it right into the glass for a sparkly effect!

    How to Make Mermaid Water

Now that you know what's in this fruity drink, the question is how do you make a mermaid cocktail? Here are the steps for making this easy Mermaid Water recipe:

    Sugar Rim

    Prepping rim for colored sugar.
    1. First, prepare the glass by rubbing a lemon wedge around the rim of the glass.
    2. Place colored sugar on a flat plate and lightly stir together. Place wet rim in sugar to coat.

    Blue Mermaid Drink

Steps 1-2 to make rum punch.
    1. Fill a glass with crushed ice then pour coconut rum into it.
    2. Add peach schnapps.
Steps 3-4 to make Mermaid Water punch.
    1. Pour in lemonade almost to the top.
    2. Slowly add blue curacao and watch how the cocktail changes to its beautiful signature color.
Overhead of blue mermaid drink with peach and lemon garnish.

This is the perfect poolside, backyard BBQ, beach cocktail that's easy to make for one or by the pitcher. So when you're craving a tropical cocktail, take a dive into this tasty Mermaid Water drink for a big glass of summer flavor. Cheers!

    Serving Variations

    • Mermaid Martini - just add a shot of vodka to the mix
    • Frozen or Slushie - Add more ice and blend in a blender.
    • Large Batch - Easily quadrupled to make it by the pitcher, punch bowl, or, as the Beach Bucket Restaurant calls it, by the bucket (as in a pail for the beach).

What to Serve with Mermaid Water Cocktail

Since this cocktail is on the sweet side be sure to serve it with appetizers that are on the salty or savory side. Some suggestions are:

    • Smoked Fish Dip
    • Air Fryer Ravioli
    • Chipotle Chicken Quesadillas
    • Caprese Empanadas
    • Spicy Shrimp and Chorizo Skewers

How to Make Ahead and Store

This drink is easy to make ahead and have on hand whenever you are ready to enjoy it. It will keep for up to two weeks in the refrigerator, any longer and the flavor begins to diminish. You can also freeze it to make adult popsicles or add more ice and serve it as a slushy.

    More Fruity Cocktail Recipes

These blue, green, and purple cocktails are deliciously refreshing and great for summer:

    • Blackberry Margarita - made with fresh berries.
    • Ocean Breeze Drink from Cocktail with Class - a blue tropical punch with pineapple.
    • Blueberry Mojito - fresh blueberries are a tasty addition to this minty drink.
    • Sangria with Sprite - only 3 ingredients are needed for this easy drink.
    • Kiwi Mojito with Tequila - fresh kiwi with a touch of mint for tropical refreshment.

Love the color, love the flavors. Only one thing left to do, make it, pull out a lawn chair, feel the warmth of summer and watch as time just slows down!
      Well done!
