Ready to add a little cool & spicy to your Moscow Mule? Enter this icy cold Strawberry Jalapeno Moscow Mule Slushie! It's easy to make and just the cocktail the doctor ordered to beat the summer heat!
Ah, what can I say about the Moscow Mule. If you’ve never had one, you’ve probably seen them, as they are usually served in a distinctive copper mug. And you know it's going to be icy cold when you see all the condensation just dripping down the outside. It just says refreshing with a capital R.!
Well, this one is a little different. Not only is it flavored with strawberries and kicked up with a bit of jalapeno pepper but it’s a slushie too. It’s just perfect for that end of the summer party or your Labor Day picnic.
History of the Moscow Mule
The main ingredients in a Moscow mule are ginger beer, lime juice and vodka. Supposedly the drink came about around 1941 when Martin, the proud owner of recently acquired Smirnoff, wanted to interest Americans in drinking vodka.
He was also an owner of the Cock ‘n’ Bull bar in L.A., along with his friend Morgan. Now Morgan had not only ordered too much ginger beer, which he couldn’t seem to get rid of, but had a basement full of copper mugs from his girlfriend’s company.
Getting the gist of this story yet?
So the bartender, Wes Price, of the same Cock ‘n’ Bull, came up with a refreshing drink and called it the Moscow Mule. Nothing to do with Moscow but there you have it.
I think the first time I tried ginger beer was in the Florida Keys. I ordered a Dark & Stormy which I found had a refreshing, yet tangy taste. When I tasted it again in a Moscow Mule I found it had a bit more bite and was too tart for my taste.
I decided it needed a little sweetening up to satisfy my tastebuds, hence my addition of strawberries and agave. Since it’s still steaming hot here in Florida, a frozen or slushie drink was in order.
Of course, that doesn’t mean we can’t add a little heat to our cocktails just to spice things up. And voila – the Strawberry Jalapeno Moscow Mule Slushie was born.
- Place strawberries and lime juice in a blender and add chopped jalapeno.
- Add vodka to blender along with ice and blend.
- Pour into glasses and add ginger beer.
This cocktail is super easy to adapt to anyone's taste. If you like your drink less tart, more sweet, a little more vodka, it's no problem!
Make it as sweet as you want by adding more agave or just pile in the strawberries.
You can also add less ginger beer or more vodka, whatever floats your boat.
Just a word of warning, watch out for that brain freeze, while you’re quenching that thirst. (Wonder how I found that out!)
And the best part, no copper mug required! Cheers!
