Light and Effervescent Cocktails
Light and bubbly cocktails are the drink of the summer. The effervescence is refreshing and provides the perfect pick-me-up on a warm day. And fizzy drinks are more than just fun as the bubbles enhance the overall flavors in the drink. Serve this light drink for brunches, dinners, and sipping poolside.
I love me some bubbles and with the summer fruits and herbs like fresh mint so abundant what could be better than a refreshing Blueberry Bellini, a pineapple-orange flavored Hawaiian Mimosa, or the more vegetal Cucumber Mint Cocktail.
Why You'll Love This Hugo Drink
Easy to Make: Just mix 5 simple ingredients - fresh mint leaves, fresh lime, elderflower liqueur, club soda, and prosecco - in a large wine glass, stir gently and sip away.
Light and Refreshing: The Hugo spritz cocktail is a low-alcohol drink with a crispness from bubbly prosecco and soda water. Ideal for sipping on warm days without feeling weighed down.
Versatile: This hugo cocktail is a classic Italian cocktail that is easy to change up. Add different fruit juices like peach or raspberry, swap out elderflower for a different liqueur, or omit the prosecco for lemon-lime seltzer for a lower-calorie option.
What is a Hugo Spritz?
The Hugo Spritz originated in the South Tyrol region of Italy, offering a delightful twist on traditional spritz drinks. Its main ingredient, elderflower liqueur, is combined with prosecco, soda water, fresh mint, and a splash of lime juice to create a light refreshing beverage.
Hugo Spritz vs. Aperol Spritz
While both the Hugo and the classic Aperol Spritz call Italy their home, they have distinctly different tastes. Both are served with prosecco and soda, but the choice comes down to whether you prefer something sweet or something with a bit of bite.
The Aperol Spritz, with its vibrant orange hue, offers a bittersweet flavor thanks to Aperol, a bitter liqueur made from a blend of herbs and roots.
In contrast, the Hugo Spritz provides a lighter, more floral taste from the elderflower liqueur, and offers up a more delicately sweet cocktail.
Is Hugo Spritz the same as St-Germain Spritz?
Both cocktails use St Germain Elderflower liqueur but they each have their own distinct flavor. The Hugo Spritz, often called the Italian cousin of the St-Germain Spritz, adds fresh mint and zesty lime to the mix, making it a brighter, more refreshing cocktail.
Ingredients
Just 5 main ingredients are all you need for this effervescent cocktail. You'll find the exact measurements listed in the printable recipe card below.
- Elderflower liqueur – St. Germain is a brand I highly recommend.
- Prosecco – Opt for the dry white variety, such as La Marca, as it complements the sweetness of the elderflower without overpowering it. Avoid sweet or rosé versions to stay authentic.
- Club soda, soda water, or sparkling water – Adds the refreshing fizz.
- Lime – Fresh fruit is best. You’ll need one lime to give it that fresh, citrusy zing.
- Mint leaves – Fresh is best for that vibrant pop of flavor.
How to Make a Hugo Spritz
- Squeeze a lime wedge into the bottom of a stemless wine glass. Add fresh mint and muddle to release the mint oils.
- Add ice cubes and elderflower liqueur.
- Pour in a splash of soda water, club soda, seltzer, or sparkling water.
- Top with prosecco.
To finish, add slices of lime, a colorful straw, and stir lightly. Garnish with a sprig of mint if desired. It's a delicious cocktail to enjoy on a lazy summer afternoon. Say hello to your new favorite cocktail! Cheers!
Recipe Variations
Check out some creative twists you can try below:
- Syrup Options: Use elderflower syrup or mix it up with other floral or fruit syrups such as lavender, rose, or mixed berry syrups.
- Boost the Booze: For more kick, you can add a splash of gin or vodka.
- Fresh Fruits: For more flavor and color, add fresh fruits like raspberries, strawberries, or extra lime slices.
- Mocktail Version: Want to keep it alcohol-free? Swap out the prosecco for non-alcoholic sparkling white wine, lemon-lime seltzer, or sparkling fruit juice. Use elderflower syrup instead of liqueur for a refreshing virgin Hugo Spritz!
Making a Pitcher for a Large Batch
When it’s time to celebrate with friends or family, a pitcher of Hugo Spritz can come in handy. Simply multiply the ingredients based on the number of guests and mix everything in a large pitcher. Serve chilled for the best experience.
What to Serve With It
A Hugo Spritz, with its light, floral notes, is the perfect happy hour cocktail that can be enjoyed with a variety of appetizers.
- Bruschetta: Top slices of toasted baguette with a mixture of chopped tomatoes, basil, and a drizzle of olive oil for a classic Italian starter. See this bruschetta recipe.
- Caprese Skewers: Thread cherry tomatoes, fresh mozzarella balls, and basil leaves onto small skewers. Drizzle with balsamic glaze for a touch of sweetness. See this caprese skewers recipe.
- Bacon Wrapped Garlic Shrimp Crostini: For something truly spectacular, serve crispy Parmesan garlic crostini topped with mashed avocado and a grilled bacon-wrapped shrimp. See this garlic shrimp crostini recipe.
- Prosciutto and Melon: The saltiness of the prosciutto beautifully contrasts with the sweet juiciness of ripe melon, making a simple yet sophisticated pairing.
- Olives and Cheese: A selection of olives and cheeses can be a simple no-cook option.
