Chocolate Blackberry Mint Smoothie
Summer always brings to mind cool, refreshing beverages, especially here in South Florida, and smoothies have got to be at the top of my list. Of, course, I drink smoothies year round for breakfast or lunch just because they're so easy to make, delicious and packed full of healthy ingredients.
This Chocolate Blackberry Mojito Smoothie came together just by accident as I needed lunch and I didn't want to fuss. So, a smoothie it was. I gathered what I had in my fridge and pantry, including some beautiful blackberries that I had frozen for just this reason, and put my creative cap on. I also wanted to add some of my fresh mint since it was making a valiant effort to take over my indoor garden.
Not that I couldn't use my mint to make my Pineapple Coconut Mojito and Cucumber Mojito some evening but the flavor that it adds to this smoothie helps bring a freshness to it that makes it taste like summer.
What Makes This Chocolate Blackberry Mint Smoothie Healthy?
Barleans Chocolate Greens Powder - adding my greens in just a scoop of powder helps me get closer to my 5 servings of fruit and vegetable a day. And it's chocolate! I mean who can turn down chocolate? If you've never tried this product, it's great just mixed with plain yogurt or in my Blueberry Coffee Blast & Chocolate Covered Strawberry smoothies.
Yogurt - pumps up the protein
Blackberries - add important antioxidants
Chia Seeds - provide omega-3s, fiber and calcium.
Frequently Asked Questions About This Smoothie
What are the benefits of eating blackberries?
Blackberries are packed with Vitamin C and just 1 cup can provide half of the daily requirement. They are also high in fiber and manganese and are known to boost brain health. Who doesn't need that!
Can I make this smoothie without dairy?
Of course you can! In fact, I am lactose intolerant and use almond milk in place of a lowfat milk and an almond-based yogurt alternative for the Greek yogurt. You can also sub in any cashew, soy or coconut product in lieu of the dairy. If you do sub the non-dairy, boost this smoothie with your favorite protein powder.
What is the best time to sip on this smoothie?
I find the best time is in the morning or about one hour prior to working out. It also works great immediately after a workout too. The protein and nutrients help to energize you for the day.
How long can this smoothie be kept in the refrigerator?
I like to make mine fresh to get the most nutrients out of the fruit. If you need to make it ahead of time, place it in a sealed jar that is filled to the top in order to eliminate most of the air. It will keep about 1 day.
How to Layer This Blackberry Mojito Smoothie
- Milk and Yogurt go in first.
- Followed by greens powder or chocolate protein powder if you prefer.
- Add frozen blackberries and bananas. Blend.
It's pure goodness in a glass! I bet you could serve this as a milkshake and no one would be the wiser. Plus it's sugar-free, using the berries as sweeteners, and can be dairy-free by subbing out the yogurt and milk to a nut or soy based product.
So play it cool and start your day off right with this easy, healthy and delicious smoothie.
